Richard Vincent Gotti (October 12, 1928), also known "Dickie" and "Richie Meatballs", is a New York City mobster who has replaced Matthew Mancuso as head of the Lucchesi crime family and is suspected by the FBI to be the new Capo Di Tutti Capi of the New York Commission. Early LifeRichard Gotti was born in 1928 to Richard Gotti Snr. and Caterina Gotti. He grew up in Bensonhurst, a largely Italian-American neighbourhood in the borough of Brooklyn. Gotti eventually became involved in crime after being recruited into a prominent Bensonhurst street gang known as 'The Rampers'. At the age of 15, Gotti was expelled from school for stealing student possessions. Refusing to attend another school or to work, Gotti became a full-time criminal, particularly concentrating on motor vehicle theft and burglary. Prison TermsLiving in Bensonhurst, the Mafia was ever present. Like many of his fellow members of 'The Rampers', he drifted into the Mafia. At the age of 19, Gotti was involved in a car theft ring, supposedly headed by Santino Romano, a captain within the Lucchesi crime family. After 8 months of being involved, Gotti attempted to steal a 1964 Pontiac GTO in the Flatlands. While trying to start the vehicle, a police patrol car passed by and noticed the broken glass on the road. Gotti was arrested and, being that he had a previous criminal record, was sent to prison for 2 years. After his release, Gotti became more closely associated with Sonny Romano's crew. After struggling to keep up with the tribute required, Gotti gained a reputation as a low earner. Hearing the rumours, Gotti turned to petty crimes, such as breaking and entry and robbery to attempt to earn more, which would eventually send him back to prison for 10 years. ReleaseWith the structure of Lucchesi being a much different to what it once was, Gotti struggled to get connected to the family, especially because of his reputation as a bad earner. He eventually befriended future Lucchesi captain, William Mastrogiacomo, who would help him abolish his reputation as a bad earner and begin his goods fencing operations for the Lucchesi crime family. Made ManGotti was made in 1972 at the age of 43 after assisting in the murder of union representative Harold Leiter. It is thought that Gotti was inducted into the Mafia as repayment for spending 10 years without turning informant. He continued working along side long time friend William Mastrogiacomo and eventually stepped up to be his right hand man when Mastrogiacomo was made captain of Lucchesi's Brooklyn faction. In 1992, Gotti was made consigliere as a replacement to Robert Baudanza, after Mastrogiacomo took over as Lucchesi boss when it was discovered that acting boss Henry D'Anversa had turned federal witness. In 1993, after Matthew Mancuso resumed his position as head of the family, Gotti remained consigliere and the two became close, so close infact, that Gotti was named as his successor just days before he died of a stroke. It is thought that Gotti may have made many changes to the family since being the boss. These changes include shifting Eugene Zannino to Underboss and replacing him with Michael Scarpa. It is also suspected that former Jersey captain Joseph "Joey Chang" Ciancaglini has returned from being on the run and resumed his old position. It is also unknown if Gotti has actually filled in the position of consigliere with fairly unknown mobster Girolamo Zucco. Boss of BossesIt has been debated by law enforcement over who Matthew Mancuso's successor as boss of bosses actually is. Many believe that well respected boss of the Tirozzi crime family, Carlo Tirozzi has returned to the table and reclaimed the title, while others believe that Gotti has infact been voted in by the other bosses. | |||||||||||||||
